Buenos Aires beach: the “cold” truth

You probably expected tropical beaches around Buenos Aires or the Argentine coastline. Sorry to disappoint you but the beaches are not as attractive as in Brazil. Or even not warm.

However, there is an artificial beach created in a public park on the edge of Buenos Aires city. Don’t expect palm trees, a white beach, and a sea or river to swim in. Buenos Aires is located on the banks of Rio de la Plata. The river is brown because of the sediments but around Buenos Aires, it’s a bit dirty.

The city created the beach in Buenos Aires. It is there in January and February. Otherwise, it’s just a park on the river banks.

So, if you’re looking for a natural beach, then Buenos Aires City is not the right place. I suggest a day trip to Colonia de Sacramento in Uruguay or taking a bus to Pinamar or Mar del Plata.

How to go to Buenos Aires Beach?

Buenos Aires Beach is located on the edge of the city in Parque de los Niños. Five minutes away from the domestic airport “Aeroparque”. You can take the train with the destination “Tigre” departing from Retiro train station. Or take bus 28 with the destination “Ciudad Universitaria”.

Is it worth to go?

If you’re some extra days in Buenos Aires? Why not. You will get in touch with the local life in Buenos Aires. But, it’s perfect if you’re traveling with children and want to rest for a moment. There are activities such as concerts, animation for children, and a water playground. Because it’s the only “beach” in the capital city, you can expect a crowded area on weekends.

In short, you can’t swim in the river and most of the public spaces in Buenos Aires are quietly crowded in summer. I suggest heading to a rooftop bar, some have pools too 😉

Beaches around Buenos Aires

Now the good news. There are beaches on the coastline in Argentina. The most famous destination is Mar del Plata and Pinamar. Both are 4 hours away from Buenos Aires.

MAR DEL PLATA

This coastal city attracts many Argentines during the summer holidays. Mar del Plata hosts numerous theaters, art galleries, music venues, and cultural festivals throughout the year. The Mar del Plata International Film Festival is one of the most prominent events, attracting filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world.

PINAMAR

One of my favorite destinations on the Argentine coast is Pinamar. It has a long stretch of sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding areas are suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and off-roading. The nearby pine forests and sand dunes provide a scenic backdrop for these activities. Pinamar is known for its golf courses.

On the coastline, there are some restaurants with a beautiful view on the beach.
