Trains in Argentina

Traveling by train in Argentina is an option, though it won’t take you everywhere you want to go. Currently, there are seven active train lines in the country, but none of them reach the southern region near Patagonia. Additionally, there are tourist train lines like the Tren a las Nubes in Salta, the Tren Solar de la Quebrada in Jujuy, and the Tren del Fin del Mundo in Ushuaia. However, these lines are designed for tourism rather than long-distance travel.

Active long-distance train lines

The map below shows the active long-distance train lines in Argentina. To the north, the furthest destination is Tucumán, from where you can take a bus to Salta or Jujuy. To the south, the furthest point is Bahía Blanca.

Active lines:

Train to Patagonia from Buenos Aires

It is possible to travel by train from Buenos Aires to Patagonia (San Carlos de Bariloche). First, take a train from Buenos Aires to Bahía Blanca, a journey of about 19 hours. From Bahía Blanca, take a bus to Viedma, which takes around 4 hours. From the Viedma station, you can board the Tren Patagónico to San Carlos de Bariloche, a trip that takes approximately 14 hours.

However, if you compare it with a bus that takes you directly from Buenos Aires to San Carlos de Bariloche that takes around 24 hours.
