My experience at Bar Sur
I have been to Bar Sur twice, most recently in April 2026. It is a small bar on a cobblestone corner in San Telmo, open since 1967 and once a milonga, where people came to dance spontaneously. Today it is a traditional tango show, but it has kept that feeling: checkerboard floor, vintage decor and at most 30 guests.
There is no stage. The tables and chairs line the walls, and the dancers perform in the middle, so close you could almost touch them. The singer sings without a microphone and the orchestra plays without amplifiers. Back to the basics, and that is exactly what makes it special: this is what a small tango show around the corner feels like.
The welcome is warm and the food is good, with a fixed three-course menu. Take dinner & show: with the show only, you miss part of the atmosphere. Book well ahead, because the few seats sell out fast.
My tip: An absolute must if you are in San Telmo. Book well ahead: there are very few seats.
